About Us

Our Mission

The mission of Children’s Charter Elementary School is to serve as a model for an innovative, flexible educational program, which targets at-risk students in kindergarten through fifth grade. The school will be a community owned and managed charter school adhering to the highest management and accountability standards.

Our Vision

All Children’s Charter Elementary School students, regardless of socio-economic status, will have access to an excellent education – both academically and culturally— that ensures they meet the requirements for acceptance into a magnet middle school.

Our History

Children’s Charter Elementary School is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization which began as a kindergarten through second grade school in the 1997-98 school year. The school was organized by parents, teachers, business people, non-profit representatives, and others who wanted to provide alternative opportunities for students to help them reach their maximum potential. Throughout its history, Children’s Charter Elementary School has primarily served at-risk children living in poverty; the overwhelming majority have been African-American. The school currently serves 240 students with 95% qualifying for free or reduced lunch. It is a fact that children coming from at-risk neighborhoods and families are much more likely than other children to drop out of school, become delinquent, become involved in drugs, experience teen pregnancy, and/or end up in jail. Quality education is a key to breaking the patterns of failure and dependency.

We believe the definition of public education needs to be expanded so that all parents have greater control and authority in choosing where their children attend school. We believe schools must be held accountable to students, parents, and the community. There are numerous unique aspects to Children’s Charter Elementary School, many of which serve as models and are replicated by others.
